Having taken a deep dive into the world of hardened gamblers for the HBO drama“Luck,” the director Michael Mann is reteaming with that cable channel to create a documentary series about the lives of combat photographers. HBO said on Tuesday that it had ordered a nonfiction series titled “Witness” that will be produced by Mr. Mann and David Frankham, a director of commercials and documentaries, and that will focus on young photojournalists in conflict zones in Mexico, Libya, Uganda and Brazil. Mr. Mann, whose films include “Heat,” “The Insider” and “Public Enemies,” and who directed the pilot episode of “Luck” and serves as an executive producer of that series, said in a statement: “David Frankham and I share an admiration for combat photography that captures the universal – and sometimes the indescribable – in a single frame in the midst of chaos and danger.” Mr. Frankham said of “Witness” that this series “will not provide a historical context,” and will instead “immerse the audience via intimacy with the photographer into the intensity of a situation as it’s developing, as they risk their lives to capture one piece of the truth.” HBO said the first episode of “Witness” was filmed in Juarez, Mexico, and that three additional episodes of the series were in production. A premiere date was not immediately announced. COMMENTS
