Rebel Wilson: Can 'Super Fun Night' make her a TV star?

She stole scenes in "Bridesmaids" and "Pitch Perfect," but now Rebel Wilson is trying to make it as a TV star. On Wednesday ABC premiered "Super Fun Night," which features the zaftig Australian actress as an accident-prone single woman on the prowl. Wilson created the comedy, which is produced by Conan O'Brien's production company. The network is making a big bet on the show, putting the premiere right after its No. 1 comedy, "Modern Family." And Wilson has a proven connection with young viewers, winning an MTV Movie Award for her work on "Pitch Perfect." But "Super Fun Night" may not have a super-fun time of it. Critics have thumped the show for bulking up on fat jokes. Los Angeles Times critic Mary McNamara wrote that "though Wilson remains gorgeously fearless in her willingness to go all in, neither the network nor Wilson (she is an executive producer) know quite what to do with that." "Super Fun Night" earned a score of 46 out of 100 from 25 reviews on the pop-culture site Metacritic. However, even critics who haven't liked the show have praised Wilson's performance. It can take a long time for network comedies to hit their stride. Just look at "Seinfeld," the pilot of which tested so low, the story goes, that executives almost didn't order the series at all. So whether audiences will yell for Rebel may depend on how much patience ABC has. COMMENTS
