Zooey Deschanel sings the national anthem, is 'not a jerk'

Zooey Deschanel sang the national anthem Sunday night at Game 4 of the World Series, receiving a big cheer from the crowd, which we like to think was big not only because it was the national anthem at the World Series, but because she played the song straight and remembered all the words.

Unlike Christina Aguilera and Cyndi Lauper before her -- and even poor little Scotty McCreery, criticized just days ago by some who heard the words "No, Jose" rather than his country-accented "Oh, say" before Game 1 of the series -- "New Girl" star Deschanel didn't mess with success at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington, Texas, delivering an accurate "Star-Spangled Banner" free of vocal runs and other embellishments.

Perhaps being an MLB veteran helped the actress and singer? She'd done "God Bless America" for a seventh-inning stretch during a National League Championship Series game last October in San Francisco.

But no good deed goes unpunished, apparently, as 'round about the seventh inning in the contest between the Texas Rangers and St. Louis Cardinals the game announcers pointed out the empty seats where Deschanel and other folks from "New Girl" and "Glee" had been seated.

"Would have loved to have watched the whole game but I had to catch a plane so I can go to work tomorrow," Deschanel said overnight on Twitter. "That's all guys. I'm not a jerk."
